Martin Creed Ballet Work 1020 description
Turner prize-winning artist Martin Creed returns with Sadler's Wells co-commission, Work No. 1020, which has earned high critical praise since debuting in the Lilian Baylis Studio and following its hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last summer.
Work No 1020 sees Creed choreograph for classically trained dancers for the first time. Using video and music composed by Creed and played by his band, the piece is performed by five dancers restricted to only using the five core classical ballet positions, all of which are ascribed a musical note.
By limiting the dancers to the five positions, a tight framework is established in which to examine the changing effects of time, speed and direction. Inventive, intriguing and often humourous, Work No 1020 is a multimedia experience that plays with our desire to find order and pattern in the world with an eloquence that is typical of Creed's work.
